Where to Bet on The Preakness Stakes? Best Betting Sites & Predictions
The Certainty of a Short Price
Standing at a perfect 5 for 5 and dominating his most accomplished challengers to date, there’s little reason to doubt Kentucky Derby winner Justify in the Preakness.
He’s 1/2 on the morning line and that looks about right if Justify simply duplicates what he did two weeks ago. Despite early rumblings of a bruised hoof, Justify has looked no worse from the wear in his workout sessions since winning the Roses.
As unappetizing as betting on Jusitify sounds, it’s always better to leave the track with a short price rather than a long face as the old saying goes. Luckily, we don’t have to accept 50 cents on the dollar if we get creative about our Preakness betting.
Unlocking Preakness Value at Bovada
I’ll say it over and over again: the best online sports and racebooks add betting value. That’s exactly why I’m playing the Preakness at Bovada. I can still get involved with all the same bets I could make from the track, but Bovada provides several prop betting options that make the ho-hum of a short-field, short-priced Preakness a whole lot more interesting.
Here are a few props that jump off the page:
Will Justify Win the Preakness, but not win the Belmont Stakes?
This prop looks pretty good to me because:
- A) I think Justify wins the Preakness
- B) I think he”ll be very vulnerable – as so many great horses have – coming back in three weeks in the Belmont Stakes.
Let’s not get carried away thinking that just because Bob Baffert was able to overcome 37 years of history in winning the Triple Crown with American Pharoah, that he’ll be able to duplicate it again three short years later. I like Justify, but he’d have to double his Pre-Derby win total in American’s most grueling stretch of races. I say YES to this prop bet and like the fact that I’m getting almost 2/1. It looks even better compared to a similar prop where you’ll only get 1/2 odds for wagering against him winning the TC. This is clearly the better play.
Justify EXACT Finishing Position
This bet is a bit of a reach, but if you like big balloons, I have a suggestion for you. Take Justify to finish last. What, you ask? How can I say that after I gave Justify my vote of confidence to win? I’m not suddenly schizophrenic and I haven’t changed my mind, but hear me out.
Things happen in horse racing. If Justify throws the rider, loses a shoe, collides with another horse or just doesn’t feel like running, this result could actually happen a la Big Brown at 1/9 in the 2008 Belmont Stakes. God forbid something goes wrong with the big horse, but history suggests it can happen. You can get 30/1 on Justify running last at Bovada, so this might be worth a few shekels for the contrarians among us. And remember Ricky Bobby’s famous words, “if you’re not first, you’re last.”
Handicapping & Picks
aLike most people who will write about this race, I’ve made it all about Justify. But let’s not forget that valiant second-place effort Good Magic made in the Kentucky Derby. The runner-up will take another crack at Justify in the Preakness and has a fair chance at 3/1 on the morning line.
In my judgment and not-so-clever opinion, Good Magic is the only horse with any legitimate chance to upset Justify. After that it’s a crapshoot. Thus my simple play for the Preakness will an icecold exacta with Justify on top of Good Magic. I may play a trifecta using the ALL button for third.
This could be one of those races where the most obvious result occurs and everyone stands around looking at the payouts wondering why Justify over Good Magic returns $10 for every $2 in the exacta. I I can turn $20 into $100, I’ll be smug about this one even though it’s the same bet everyone out there should also be making. That’s what I’m hoping for at least.
