Robert Whittaker Set To Take Middleweight Crown at UFC 243

Robert Whittaker Set To Take Middleweight Crown at UFC 243

The Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, sunny Australia is the venue for the upcoming UFC 243 where Israel Adesanya prepares to defend his Middleweight title against Australia's Robert Whittaker.

This is the fourth time the UFC has stopped off in Melbourne and everything points towards it being an epic Middleweight unification bout between Adesanya and Whittaker.

  • Robert Whittaker is the favorite with UFC 243 odds of -135
  • Israel Adesanya, the reigning champion, has UFC odds of +110 and is underdog in this fight
  • Robert Whittaker has won nine consecutive bouts since back-to-back losses in 2013 and 2014
  • Israel Adesanya is undefeated in 17 fights, 13 of those victories have come by the way of knockout

Robert Whittaker Destined to Become Middleweight Champion

Australia's Robert Whittaker looks set to become the UFC Middleweight champion if the UFC 243 odds are to be believed. Our friend over at Bovada price a Whittaker victory at -135, making him the clear favorite in this bruising contest with Israel Adesanya.

Whittaker has been a professional MMA fighter since 2008 and joined the UFC four years later. Whittaker enjoyed a 9-2 record before moving to UFC where he won his first fight.

Brad Scott was his opponent and Whittaker won The Ultimate Fighter: The Smashes Welterweight tournament by unanimous decision.

The Aussie then defeated Colton Smith with a third-round TKO (punches) before losing back-to-back fights against Court McGee and Stephen Thompson.

This put some serious question marks over Whittaker's head, but he responded in style with nine consecutive victories, eight of those coming when he stepped up to Middleweight.

Known a "The Reaper", Whittaker stands at six-feet tall and has a reach of 73.5 inches. Whittaker's biggest issue is frequent injuries.

He was set to fight Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 234, a fight we predicted Whittaker to win. Injury saw him withdraw from that fight and he has not fought since his split decision victory over Yoel Romero at UFC 225 back in June 2018.

Whittaker says he is back to full fitness and that could be deadly for Adesanya. While Whittaker is not the best UFC fighter when on the canvas, he does have a very nasty ground and pound attack when he manages to get on top.

Nine of Whittaker's 20 victories have come by knockout, which is surprising as he has incredible power and speed, which is why he is usually a favorite in the UFC Vegas odds whenever he fights.

Whittaker is also a very durable fighter having only been knocked out one and forced to submit once. He showed in the Romero fight that he can soak up blows and still come out fighting, and that is wh Whittaker at -135 is the best of our UFC picks.

Israel Adesanya Could Be Defeated For The First Time

Israel Adesanya goes into his title defense with a perfect 17-0 record, six of those victories coming during his UFC career. Standing at 6 feet 4 inches tall and with an 80-inch reach, Adesanya has a height and reach advantage over Whittaker but he is going to need more than measurements to retain his UFC Middleweight title.

Born in Nigeria, Adesanya moved to Aukland, New Zealand when he was 13 years old and has lived there ever since. He won his first bout in March 2012 when he stopped James Griffiths with a TKO (punches) in the first round.

Adesanya has cine gone on to beat his next 16 opponents, 13 of those by knocking them out, so Whittaker has to be on his guard against the power of Adesanya.

Adesanya last fought on April 2019 at UFC 236 when he became the UFC Middleweight champion. The Kiwi beat Kelvin Gastelum by unanimous decision. It was here at Sports Betting Sites that we correctly predicted that Adesanya victory.

The former kickboxing champion, who boasted a 75-4 record, definitely has what it takes to hurt Whittaker, but we cannot help thinking that Whittaker is the best all-round fighter out of the two.

Adesanya has never forced a submission and doing that against Whittaker is unlikely. Whittaker cannot match Adesanya for pure power, but he can take him to the ground and rain blows down on him. In order for that to happen, however, Whittaker is going to have to get in close and risk being hit by Adesanya's immense power and speed.

Conclusion

Bookmakers rarely get their odds wrong and pricing Whittaker at -135 makes him the best of the UFC 243 picks.

This has all the hallmarks of an incredible fight and whoever emerges with the Middleweight title will have been made to fight tooth and nail for that victory. The longer this fight goes on, the more likely it is for Whittaker to win. If Whittaker can keep his defense tight, he should get his hands on the UFC title.

Back him to do this. Don't forget, our UFC 242 predictions both came in, make of that what you will!
