UFC 241: Daniel Cormier Set to Retain Heavyweight Title

UFC 241: Daniel Cormier Set to Retain Heavyweight Title
UFC 241 takes place on August 18, 2019 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California and the only thing hotter than the weather will be the action in the octagon. The headline fight sees Daniel Cormier defend his heavyweight title against Stipe Micoic, can Cromier defend his title?

Daniel Cromier attempts to defend his heavyweight title in a rematch against Stipe Micoic and the UFC 241 odds suggest he will be successful. Cromier goes into the bout as a -140 favorite with Micoic being the +110 underdog.

  • Daniel Cromier knocked out Stipe Micoic in the first round of their UFC 226 fight
  • Cromier is the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the UFC and considered to be one of the best fighters of all-time
  • Micoic has not fought since he was knocked out by Cromier in July 2018
  • Two of Micoic’s defeats have seen him knocked out.
  • Cromier had a knockout defeat ruled a no contest after his opponent failed a drug test

UFC 241 Picks

Cromier To Win at -140

Daniel “DC” Cromier is a special athlete and already one of the legends of UFC. Now 40-years-old, Cromier has publically stated that he only has a couple more fights left in him, one being the rematch for the UFC Heavyweight title against Stipe Micoic.

Bovada‘s UFC odds make Cromier a -140 favorite in this fight and it is easy to see why. It took DC 16 fights to lose his first bout, his only loss to-date. That was against Jon Jones at UFC 182 in May 2015. Cromier also initially lost to Jones at UFC 214 but it was later overturned to a No Contest with Jones failing a drug test.

Cromier has fought once since knocking out Micoic in the first round of their fight, defeating Derrick Lewis by submission after Lewis could not break free from Cromier’s rear-naked choke. This was Cromier’s first successful defense of his UFC Heavyweight Championship.

We would expect Cromier to use his immense grappling skills in this contest as he tries to avoid being knocked out by Micoic as he has the power to do that. Cromier has a wrestling background and that will come in handy against Micoic. Don’t forget we correctly predicted Max Holloway would win the UFC 240 headline fight.

Micoic has now been knocked out twice in his 21 fight career, once all the way back at UFC on Fuel TV in September 2012 by Stefan Struve and then by Cromier at UFC 226. That last KO happened to Micoic after 4:33 of the first round, which was quite an embarrassing defeat to take in his fourth title defense.

When Micoic last fought Cromier, he went into the fight with UFC Vegas odds determining he was the favorite due to his size and power advantage.

It all went wrong for him, however. Micoic’s best chance of avenging that defeat will be to land a knockout punch on Cromier as he has to power to do that. The problem lies in actually landing that punch as Cromier has a wealth of experience and will avoid those killer blows at all costs.

UFC picks: Daniel Cromier to win at -140

Yoel Romero a big favorite over Paulo Costa

Another huge fight at UFC 241 sees Yoel Romero take on Paulo “The Eraser” Costa in the middleweight division. Romero has UFC odds of -170 with Costa coming in at +110.

These two amazing fighters have been scheduled to fight each other three times but the fight has never gone ahead for various reasons. Romero has twice challenged for the UFC title, both times against Robert Whittaker, who had an epic fight at UFC 234, but fell short on both occasions.

Those two defeats make up most of Romero’s three defeats, both by decision. Romero may be 42 years old now but the six-time world and Olympic medal winner is showing no signs of slowing down.

Costa will be a deadly opponent for Romero and Romero will have to be at the top of his game to stop the Brazilian from knocking him out.

We fancy Costa in this battle if only because he is so far undefeated and has managed to win 11 of his 12 fights by knockout. If Costa can land one of his thunderous blows, it could be game over for Romero.

UFC Picks: Paulo Costa to win at +110

Anthony Pettis vs Nate Diaz Could Go Either Way

One of the most difficult fights to predict on the UFC 241 card is Anthony Pettis versus Nate Diaz who have UFC Vegas odds of -115 each.

Both fighters have lost more than their fair share of fights in their careers (Pettis has lost eight times and Diaz 11) but both have the power and ability to knock their opponents out.

Pettis gets the nod here for us, if only because Diaz has not fought since he lost to Conor McGregor in UFC 202 all the way back in August 2016.

UFC Picks: Anthony Pettis to win at -115
