UFC 240: Holloway the Clear Favorite to Defeat Edgar

UFC 240: Holloway the Clear Favorite to Defeat Edgar
UFC 240, billed as Holloway vs Edgar, takes place at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on July 27, 2019. The fight card is brimming with fantastic battles, with the highlight being between current UFC Featherweight champion Max Holloway and former Lightweight champion Frankie Edgar. Holloway is the clear favorite, but can Edgar upset the odds?

UFC 240 odds suggest the Max Holloway versus Frankie Edgar fight for the UFC Featherweight Championship on July 27th will be a one-sided affair with Holloway the clear -400 favorite and Edgar coming in at +300. Will this bout really be that clear cut? Check out the latest odds and picks carefully prepared by Sports Betting Sites.

  • Max Holloway is the reigning UFC Featherweight champion and -400 favorite to retain his title.
  • Frankie Edgar has +300 UFC Vegas odds for this fight, making him a clear underdog.
  • Holloway has won 20 of his 24 professional fights, 10 coming by the way of knockout.
  • Edgar has won 23 of his 30 fights, only seven of these have come via a knockout

Max Holloway Set to Retain His Title

It will be a case of third time lucky for Max Holloway (-400) and Frankie Edgar (+300) when they step into the octagon on July 27 for UFC 240 because the previous two fights between these two were both canceled due to the fighters being injured.

The current UFC odds suggest this should be a relatively straightforward fight for Holloway who Bovada price as an overwhelming -400 favorite to retain his UFC Featherweight title.

Holloway won 13 consecutive bouts, after losing to the legendary Conor McGregor in 2013, before losing to Dustin Poirier at UFC 236 by the way of a unanimous decision. It was an epic battle that earned the fighters the Fight of the Night award.

Although Holloway has defeated the likes of Jose Aldo (twice), Anthony Pettis and Jerem Stephens, he has yet to record a victory against a high-level wrestle-boxer like Edgar is.

Holloway has a five-inch height advantage and a one-inch reach advantage so he needs to keep Edgar at distance.

Edgar is going to have to get in close if he has any chance of beating Holloway in this fight. He could aim for takedowns, but Holloway’s ground work has looked incredible of late and going in for these grapples opens up Edgar to Holloway’s devastating blows.

One thing on Edgar’s side is he is a very resilient fighter who can soak up a lot of punishment. The thing is, Edgar is likely to have to endure a Holloway onslaught and it is difficult to see how he can win this fight.

That said, he could last the distance.

Pick: Hollow to win via unanimous decision.

Cris Cyborg to Win in the First Round

Cristiane “Crys Cyborg” Justino takes on Felicia Spencer in the women’s featherweight bout at UFC 240 and has UFC betting odds of -700, making her the clear favorite.

Cyborg has incredible power as is evident by her record of 20 victories from 22 fights, 17 coming by the way of knockout. However, at UFC 232 in December 2019, Cyborg was knocked out with a punch from Amanda Nunes for only her second defeat in her professional career.

Not only did Cyborg lose the fight, but she also relinquished her UFC Featherweight Championship title.

Spencer has only fought seven times in her professional UFC career and has won all seven bouts, one by knockout, two decisions and four submissions. The problem for Spencer is her grapple defense is weak and this has been a major issue for UFC fighters down the years.

Her only chance of victory against Cyborg will be to get her to submit during the first round because Cyborg’s tremendous power will be too much for Spencer to handle.

If Spencer does manage to get Cyborg on the floor early, she needs to finish the bout there and then because if Cyborg’s allowed back on her feet, it could be a massacre.

Pick: Cyborg to win by TKO in the first round

Some of the Underdogs Should Win

Out of the five main fights on the card, we predict at least one of the underdogs will defy the UFC odds and emerge victoriously.

We’ve already ascertained Max Holloway and Cris Cyborg are going to win their respective fights, but what about the others?

Arman Tsarukyan is the -210 favorite to win against Olivier Aubin-Mercier (+170) but we think the latter will win.The Canadian is improving all the time as a fighter while Tsarukyan appears to have hit a ceiling. This could be a good fight to boost your betting bankroll with.

Geoffrey Neal (-285) should make light work of Niko Price (+225) and could send him to the showers in the first round, while Krzysztof Jotko (-170) should be too strong for Marc-Andre Barriault (+140) if he manages to make it to the clinch, but Barriault does have the power to stop his Polish opponent; it will be a tight affair.

UFC 240 Fight Card Betting Odds

  • Max Holloway (-400) vs. Frankie Edgar (+300)
  • Arman Tsarukyan (-210) vs Olivier Aubin-Mercier (+170)
  • Cris Cyborg (-700) vs Felicia Spencer (+450)
  • Geoffrey Neal (-285) vs Niko Price (+225)
  • Marc-Andre Barriault (+140) vs Krzysztof Jotko (-170)
