UFC 237: Jessica Andrade Favorite to Beat Rose Namajunas
The UFC Women’s Strawweight Championship bout between Rose Namajunas and Jessica Andrade is the headline fight of UFC 237 in Rio de Janeiro. Andrade is on home soil and is the favorite to take Namajunas’ title according to the latest UFC betting odds that price Andrade at -130 and Namajunas at +100, according to Bovada.
- This is the first bout Rose Namajunas has had outside of the United States of America
- Rose Namajunas has a three inch reach advantage over Jessica Andrade
- Jared Cannonier is a -155 favorite to defeat Anderson Silva (+125) in the men’s middleweight fight
- Jose Aldo has UFC odds of -145 to defeat Alex Volkanovski
- UFC 237 sees the rescheduled Women’s Bantamweight clash between Irene Aldana (-300) and Bethe Correia (+230)
Jessica Andrade To Become the UFC Women’s Strawweight Champions
Rose Namajunas is the current UFC Women’s Strawweight champion and is ranked 14th in the official UFC pound-for-pound rankings. So why is she not the favorite to retain her title when she takes on Brazilian sensation Jessica Andrade?
Namajunas is a terrific fighter who stands at five feet five inches and has a 65 inch reach. She is on the back of a three fight winning streak that saw her defeat Joanna Jedrzejczyk in a title match, securing the title in thanks to a first round TKO (punches). She then successfully defended her title at UFC 223 in a rematch after a unanimous decision.
Two factors come into play to explain why Namajunas is +100 to retain her title and Andrade is the -130 favorite. First, Namajunas has never fought outside of the United States and this fight takes place in Brazil, the home country of Andrade who will have the majority of the crowd on her side; the Brazilians are extremely passionate about all their sport stars.
Second, Namajunas has not stepped into the octagon for 13 months following a lingering case of spinal stenosis from a C6 vertebral compression fracture. These symptoms came to light while Namajunas was training for UFC 223.
Andrade not only has home town advantage, the five feet two inches star is also the number one ranked Strawweight female fighter in the UFC. Like Namajunas, Andrade is on the back of a three match winning streak. Two of those fights she won by unanimous decision, her last saw her knockout Karoline Kowalkiewica with a punch in the first round in their UFC 228 bout.
While Andrade is giving up three inches in reach, her boxing and muay thai style combined with a brown belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu could be too much for Namajunas to cope with, especially after more than a year away from the action.
Brazilian Star Anderson Silva Hoping to Cause an Upset on Home Soil
Another Brazilian in the shape of Anderson Silva (+125) steps into the octagon during UFC 237 in a middleweight bout against Jared Cannonier (-155).
Silva is the former UFC Middleweight champion and still holds the record for the longest title reign that spanned 2,457 days and saw him record 16 consecutive victories from 2006 to 2013. Known as The Spider, Silva has been described as being the greatest MMA fighter of all-time.
Things have not gone too well for Silva of late and he only has one victory in his last seven fights. That win came at UFC 208 courtesy of a unanimous decision against Derek Brunson. Two of those defeats were for Silva’s middleweight crown and to be fair, those last seven fights have taken place over the course of almost six years.
Cannonier is the number 10 in the UFC Middleweight rankings yet is the -155 favorite to defeat Silva in this UFC 237 fight. After winning his first seven professional bouts, Cannonier has since gone four wins and four defeats, with four of those fights going the distance.
This will only be Cannonier’s second fight at Middleweight, his previous bout being at UFC 230 when he defeated David Branch by TKO (punches) to earn himself the Performance of the Night.
Can Jose Aldo Overcome Alexander Volkanovski?
The Featherweight clash between Jose Aldo and Alexander Volkanovski looks to be a one-sided affair according to the latest UFC 237 odds, with Aldo coming in at -145 and Volkanovski available at +115.
Aldo is one of the more famous UFC fighter, not only because he had that amazing bout against Conor McGregor at UFC 194 where McGregor won Aldo’s Featherweight title, but because until that fight he was undefeated in 18 contests.
He has only fought five times since that McGregor defeat in December 2015, but he has won his last two fights, both by TKO (punches).
Volkanovski may not have home soil advantage but he is an exceptional fighter who has only lost one of his 20 fights, and is unbeaten in 17 bouts, although most of those were in the Australian Fighting Championship.
The step up to UFC has gone well for Volkanovski with six straight victories, made up of three TKOs and three unanimous decisions. This is a huge fight for Volkanovski and will be a massive test to see if he can go onto greater things.
