Let’s get ready to rumble! The much anticipated rematch between Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury, billed as Unfinished Business, sees two of the world’s best heavyweights step into the ring at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on February 22nd. The last fight ended in a controversial draw. This one will not!
Travers Stakes 2019: Tacitus and Code Of Honor Are the Favorites
The 2019 Travers Stakes odds suggest this $1.25 million race is set to be hotly contested by Tacitus (+250) and Code Of Honor (+275) but it may not be the two-horse race some experts are predicting.
Each of the runners has a legitimate chance of Travers Stakes glory, here are our free horse racing picks for this huge event.
- Tacitus is the +250 favorite to win the 2019 Travers Stakes.
- With Travers Stakes current odds of +275, Code Of Honor is the second-favorite
- Maximum Security and Game Winner both withdrew from the Travers Stakes last week
- This is the 150th running of the Travers Stakes
- The course record was set in 2016 when Arrogate ran in 1:59.36
Tacitus is the highest-rated horse
Tacitus is the highest-rated horse in the 2019 Travers Stakes field with a rating of 8.41, which means it is unsurprising that it is the +250 favorite with Bovada to win the race. Of course, ratings are only there for guidance and anything can happen over the 10-furlong race.
Tacitus is a fantastic horse and it is easy to see why it is number one for many Travers Stakes 2019 picks. It has won three of its last seven races, finishing second twice and fourth on one occasion.
Last time Tacitus ran was on July 27th at the Group 2 Jim Dandy. Tacitus finished second to Tax, who also runs in the 2019 Travers Stakes, and ahead of Global Campaign.
While Tacitus is the favorite here, it is worth noting it finishes third the last time it ran at 10-furlong distance. In May 2019, Tacitus finished behind Country House and Code Of Honor in the Kentucky Derby, running a time of 2:03.93; that pace would not have been enough to win any Travers Stakes since 1997.
Is 10 Furlongs Too Long for Code Of Honor?
Code Of Honor is up there at the top of many 2019 Travers Stakes 2019 expert picks and with odds of +275 with Bovda is it easy to see why. Like Tacitus, Code Of Honor has won three of its last seven races, with two runner-up finishes, a third and a fourth-place finish making up the rest of those results.
What puts us off betting on Code Of Honor is the horse is not a regular at this distance. All three of the aforementioned victories have come from races of 1 1/16 miles or less, with one of them being over a paltry six furlongs.
There is no doubt that this horse is talented, but its last race, over one mile, saw it win easily although that was a Group 3 standard race so you would expect it to romp home.
Now that Maximum Security and Game Winner have withdrawn, this could be Code Of Honor's best chance of winning the Travers Stakes. We just do not think it will do so.
The Best of the Rest in the 2019 Travers Stakes
Tax is a much-fancied horse that should start around +800 making it the fourth-favorite. Tax eased home in the Withers Grup 3 race in February 2019 before finishing second to Tacitus in the Wood Memorial two months later.
At the controversial Kentucky Derby, Tax went off as a +2000 shot, but failed to live up to the previous hype and finished well down the pecking order in 14th place.
More recently, at the Jim Dandy on July 27th, Tax defeated Tacitus and Global Campaign over 1 1/18 miles; both those horses run in the Travers Stakes.
Just behind Tax in the current Travers Stakes betting odds is Highest Honors at +900. The Chad C. Brown trained Colt may have only three races behind it, but that trio of races resulted in a second-place and two victories.
Highest Honors won the Curlin on July 26th, staying ahead of Endorsed and Looking At Bikinis who are both outsiders in the Travers Cup on August 24th. It could be worth a small punt.
Another horse to consider is Owendale (+1200) although it will need conditions to be perfect if it is to win. Owendale put in a superb performance at the Preakness Stakes on May 18th, finishing third behind the excellent War of Will and Everfest.
Two horse to avoid like the plague are Laughing Fox (+5000) and Scars Are Cool (+3300). Laughing Fox simply is not good enough and will be at the starting like to make up the numbers.
It did finish fourth in the Jim Dandy behind Tax, Tacitus and Global Campaign but will be severely outclassed in the Travers Stakes field.
The same can be said for Scars Are Cool who is likely to get some bets placed on him due to his name but the +3300 odds just aren't long enough even for a place bet.
Current Travers Stakes Betting Odds (August 19th)
- Tacitus: +250
- Code Of Honor: +275
- Mucho Gusto: +500
- Tax: +800
- Highest Honors: +900
- Global Campaign: +1200
- Owendale: +1200
- Endorsed: +1400
- Looking At Bikinis: +2000
- Spinoff: +2000
- Everfast: +2800
- Chess Chief: +3300
- Rowayton: +3300
- Scars Are Cool: +3300
