Who Is Going To Win 2017 World Series
By Angelo Montilla
Here are five teams to put your money on early on, with odds courtesy of Bovada.
Chicago Cubs (+450)
The Curse of the Billy Goat was finally snapped after more than 100 years, but do the Chicago Cubs have what it takes to make it two in a row?
No team has won back-to-back World Series crowns since the New York Yankees captured three consecutive titles from 1998 to 2000.
But if there’s a team that can break that trend, it’s the Chicago Cubs, who have nearly the same team that captured the World Series in 2016. The Cubs’ starting rotation ranks among the best in the majors, led by top Jon Lester and Jake Arrieta, who combined for 37 wins last season.
The combination of Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo batting near the top of the order will only strengthen Chicago’s chances of repeating.
Boston Red Sox (+450)
After a disappointing exit in the ALDS last season, the Boston Red Sox return to the field hungrier for a World Series championship.
There will be a gaping hole in the Red Sox’s batting order with the absence of David Ortiz, who led the team with 38 home runs a season ago. However, with a star-studded rotation that features Rick Porcello, newly signed Chris Sal and left-hander David Price, the Red Sox will be World Series contenders come fall. The lineup may be lacking power, but outfielder Mookie Betts and shortstop Xander Bogaerts —both of whom are .300 hitters — will make up for it with their bats.
Cleveland Indians (+900)
Even with an injury-plagued starting rotation, the Cleveland Indians were able to reach the World Series only to fall short against the Chicago Cubs. Throw in a healthy Carlos Carrasco and Danny Salazar into what’s an already strong top 5, the Indians have what it takes to challenge for another American League championship. The Indians lacked power in their playoff run and the addition of slugger Edwin Encarnacion solves that problem.
Los Angeles Dodgers (+900)
The defending National League Division champion Los Angeles Dodgers will be knocking on the door for the 2017 World Series.
How can they not when the Dodgers have the best pitcher in baseball? Clayton Kershaw must return to his 20-plus win season to give the Dodgers a real shot in a competitive National League. The Dodgers will likely rely on a strong bullpen and closer Kenley Jansen to steal games throughout the season.
Toronto Blue Jays (+2200)
As the old saying goes, pitching wins championships, and despite losing their best slugger, the Blue Jays still boast one of the best starting rotations in the Big Leagues.
Aaron Sanchez is poised to have a breakout season as the Blue Jays’ most promising pitcher. Toronto, when you factor in Marco Estrada, Marcus Stroman and J.A. Happ, will be in a position to compete each night.
The question is whether the club make up for the power it lost when Edwin Encarnacion bolted to ink a new deal with the Cleveland Indians? The addition of free-agent signing Kendrys Morales will take some of the pressure off of both Jose Bautista and 2015 AL MVP Josh Donaldson.
