Who Will Win the 2019 Kentucky Derby? Latest Odds and Preview
The 2019 Kentucky Derby, the 145th running of this fantastic horse race, takes place at the world famous Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky on Saturday 4th May and the latest odds suggest Omaha Beach, Roadster and Game Winner are going to be the frontrunners. Who is your money going on?

Saturday 4th May is the day of the 2019 Kentucky Derby, one of the richest horse racing events in the world with a purse of $3 million. Early Kentucky Derby odds price Omaha Beach as a +400 favorite, closely followed by Roadster (+450) and Game Winner (+500), but who do we think is in with the best chance of winning the 2019 Kentucky Derby?

  • The Kentucky Derby post time is 6:50 p.m. ET on Saturday 4th May
  • Omaha Beach is the +400 favorite to win the 2019 Kentucky Derby
  • Kentucky Derby odds of +450 are available on Roadster
  • The much fancied Game Winner can be bet on at +500
  • Maximum Security (+1000) does have a good chance but is splitting opinion

The 2019 Kentucky Derby Favorites

Omaha Beach (+400) is the current favorite to win the 2019 Kentucky Derby, although the horse is not going to have it his own way. Punters around the world have been betting heavily on Omaha Beach, not just because of his name or the fact he was bred in Kentucky, but because he is a fantastic horse in terrific form.

The Kentucky Derby is raced over 1 ¼ mile and Omaha Beach is used to running similar distances. His last two races resulted in victories over distances of 1 1/8 miles and 1 1/16 miles showing he has the pedigree to go all the way in the Kentucky Derby this year.

Roadster is the +450 second favorite to win the Kentucky Derby. A victory at the Santa Anita Derby on April 6th over 1 1/8 miles showed that Roadster is capable of running over longer distances. Also, Roadster finished ahead of fellow Kentucky Derby frontrunner Game Winner in that race, prompting horse racing bettors to pile wagers on him.

Game Winners +500 Kentucky Derby odds make him the third favorite by a narrow margin. Four victories in his last six outings have seen his betting odds shorten, although two of those wins came at distances of six and seven furlongs. Recently, Game Winner won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile over 1 1/16 miles and finished second to Omaha Beach at the Rebel Stakes, again over 1 1/16 miles.

The 2019 Kentucky Derby Outsiders

While the odds on the three favorites are quite favorable, nothing gets your blood pumping better than placing a wager on one of the outsiders and seeing it romp home to victory. Of course, the likelihood of this happening is less than if you bet on one of the favorites, but the following horses have a legitimate shot of becoming the 2019 Kentucky Derby champion.

Maximum Security is a horse that has split the opinions of horse racing experts around the globe. He is no doubt a fine specimen of a horse and he ran amazingly well as he sped to victory in the Florida Derby on March 30th, but he has never ran at 1 ¼ miles and the step up in distance could prove to be too much in the Kentucky Derby field that is littered with stellar horses.

That said, Bovada currently price Maximum Security at +1000, making him 2.5 times less likely to defeat favorite Omaha beach and he is definitely not 2.5 times less likely to win this race, so is worth a punt of anyone’s money.

Another relatively long shot is War of Will at +1800. The horse won the Lecomte Stakes by four lengths in what was only his second outing on dirt and followed that up with a victory in the 1 1/16 mile Risen Star. A ninth-place finish in the Louisiana Derby may put punters off betting on War of Will, but if you watch that race back, the horse lost his footing early in proceedings and it was almost impossible to recover the lost ground.

Do not right off the chances of Tacticus either, a +800 shot according to sports betting giants Bovada. Tacticus is in superb form over longer distances than the Kentucky Derby runs over. He won the Birdstone over a distance of 1 ¾ miles on December 8th and followed that up with a win at the Temperence Hill Invitational over the distance of 1 5/8 miles so is definitely one to watch.

Horse Racing Tips

Before you place a wager on any horse, particularly at the Kentucky Derby, it pays to do your research. Look into each and every horses form and study their recent races. What distances do they seem to excel at? How fast was their time in those races? How do those times compare to other horses in the Kentucky Derby line up? If the sports betting site you choose to bet on the Kentucky Derby offers each way betting, consider betting each way on one of the longer shot horses, this way you still see a return when you horse places in the race. Finally, should your sports betting site allow for in-play betting, watch the race live and study the horses to see if they still have plenty in reserve. Is the jockey riding the horse hard or does he look relaxed.
