Champions League Betting Picks: Are Manchester City Worthy Favorites?

Champions League Betting Picks: Are Manchester City Worthy Favorites?
The Group Stage draw has been made for the 2019-20 UEFA Champions League, the 28th such competition since it rebranded from the European Cup. Bovada's current favorite according to its Champions League winner odds are English Premier League outfit Manchester City. Can Pep Guardiola's men finally win the Champions League?

Manchester City has been installed as the favorites to win European soccer’s biggest competition with Champions League odds of +350.

Manchester City has reached at least the quarter-finals stage in three of the last four competitions, is this the year they finally lift European soccer’s most sought after trophy?

  • Manchester City are the bookmakers’ Champions League picks with odds of +350
  • Five-time Champions League champions FC Barcelona are the +500 second-favorites for glory this season.
  • Reigning champions Liverpool are currently priced at +650 and look to be a shrewd bet.
  • Of the outsiders, Juventus look incredible value at +1000
  • Last year’s losing finalists, Tottenham Hotspur, are a longshot +2500, making them ninth-favorites.

Will Manchester City Win the Champions League?

The question on everyone’s lips is whether Pep Guardiola can steer his Manchester City to UEFA Champions League glory this season or will the falter in the latter stages like in previous seasons.

Bovada is offering +350 Champions League betting odds on Manchester City lifting the trophy and it looks to be a fair price for the English Premier League winners.

Manchester City fans should be delighted with being drawn in Group C, one of the weakest groups in this year’s competition. City faces Ukraine’s Shakhtar Donetsk, Croatia’s Dinamo Zagreb, and Italian outfit Atalanta. It should be no surprise that City are -700 to top Group C and a ridiculous -5000 to advance from the group.

Pep Guardiola strengthened his squad over the summer by investing another £135 million. In came Angelino from PSV Eindhoven, Zack Steffan from Columbus Crew and a pair of huge money signings in Joao Cancelo from Juventus for £60 million and Rodri from Atletico Madrid for £62.8 million.

City will have to cope without key defender Aymeric Laporte who has undergone knee surgery and is likely to miss the entire season. Leroy Sane is also recovering from an ACL injury and will be out for most of the campaign. The blue half of Manchester, however, has a wealth of attacking talent at its disposal so are unlikely to miss Sane, as insane as that sounds when you say it out loud!

After reaching the semi-finals in the 2015-16 season, City exited the Champions League in the Last 16 the following season. They then achieved back-to-back quarter-finals. Is this City’s year? It is hard to bet against them, especially as some of the other elite teams are going through a rebuilding phase. Back Manchester City to win the Champions League at +350 at Bovada.

Never Write Off Barcelona or Real Madrid

You should never write off the chances of the two Spanish La Liga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid, even though they have looked like a spent force recently. Barcelona has won the Champions League five times while Real Madrid has lifted the trophy on a record 13 occasions.

Of these two La Liga clubs, Barcelona has the best chance of glory and their Champions League winner odds of +500 reflect this. Barcelona signed Frenkie De Jong from Ajax and he is an amazing prospect.

More importantly, they also secured the services of Antoine Griezmann to add some creativity and goals to a team that already includes Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez in its ranks.

Do bear in mind Barcelona battle Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan, and Slavia Praha in Group F. They are -275 favorites to win the group and -1600 to advance.

Real Madrid reappointed Zinedine Zidane at the end of last season, a man who won three Champions League titles with Madrid as a coach. The board backed Zidane in the transfer market, allowing him to bring in Ferland Mendy from Lyon and Eden Hazard from Chelsea.

Something doesn’t feel right at Madrid, although their +800 odds do look tempting. If Zidane can get his players to gel, they will be a force. If not, Real could be looking for a new manager before the Group Stage is over.

Madrid should definitely progress from their group (-1600) and could win it (-125) but it will likely be a two-team race between them and Paris St. Germain. We don’t expect Club Brugge or Galatasary to cause many problems.

Who is a Good Outside Bet to Win the Champions League?

It is amazing to think it was far back a the 1995-96 season that Juventus last won the Champions League. They are priced at +1000 to win this year’s competition and could prove to be a shrewd bet under the circumstances.

A raft of summer signings including Matthijs de Ligt, Aaron Ramset, and Danilo give Juventus more strength in depth. It may be worth seeing how they perform in the Group Stage before wagering on them as they lock horns with Atletico Madrid, Bayern Leverkusen, and Lokomotive Moscow. If they struggle against any of these teams, stay clear of Juve.

It is hard to write a case against reigning champions Liverpool (+650). Perhaps the only downside is Jurgen Klopp did not strengthen his squad in the summer. A

ny injury to one of their talented front three of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane or Firmino is going to cost them dearly, especially after the sales of Danny Ings and Daniel Sturridge. Likewise, if they are missing Virgil van Dijk for any period of time they are in big trouble as he holds the team together.

We also like the look of England at +150 as the nationality of the winner team, with Spain a close second at +240. They’d be out Champions League picks.
