Best Bets on the Springboard Mile Race 2018

Best Bets on the Springboard Mile Race 2018
Granted, there aren't many great race cards in the month of December, but the Springboard Mile card Sunday, Dec.16 at Remington is a notable exception. Headlined by the $400,000 race for two year-olds that offers Kentucky Derby qualifying points, the featured event is legitimately one of the best wagering opportunities of the month.

With 11 juveniles lined up, including four stablemates from the Steve Asmussen barn, the Springboard has an interesting feel in terms of handicapping the race and sorting out wagering value. The favored Epic Dreamer (8/5 ML) last raced October 26 at Belmont for trainer Kelly, but has been stabled in the midwest for several weeks in preparation for this start.

Here’s a quick glance at the top 5 last-start Beyer Figures in the field:

  • Epic Dreamer/81
  • Bankit/78
  • Six Shooter/ 78
  • Long Range Toddy/77
  • D Toz/74

Odds and posts

  1. Epic Dreamer 8/5
  2. Kaziranga 15/1
  3. Marquee Prince 10/1
  4. Six Shooter 8/1
  5. Long Range Toddy 12/1
  6. Tone Broke 15/1
  7. Dobbins G 30/1
  8. Bankit 3/1
  9. Tobacco Road 15/1
  10. Dunph 10/1
  11. D Toz 20/1

Picks and preview

  • I seriously hope I can get Dunph at 10/1, but I know that isn’t realistic. This horse has won 2 of 3 career starts for trainer Michael Maker, and the last-out flop at Churchill in the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club was excusable due to the sloppy conditions. Take that effort out of the equation and he’s undefeated with two open-length wins along with a co-best Beyer Speed Figure of 83 (tied with the favored Epic Dreamer). This is a very bad morning line price, and one the betting public is sure to rectify with their wagering capital.
  • Epic Dreamer is precocious, but he’s overbet if he goes to post at 8/5. This guy is plenty fast with a pedigree to stretch out nicely, but he’s only faced maidens to date. The last two workouts look lively, but he’ll have his hands full with a more experienced and classier group of foes.
  • Long Range Toddy is an intriguing possibility here at 12/1 on the morning line.. This colt is bred to handle more distance and has improved sharply in each of his three starts. He also owns two wins over the local track for Asmussen who connects with 18% of his starters going from sprint to route races.

Putting the bets together

I like the prospect of playing a three-horse exacta box here with Epic Dreamer, Dunph and Long Range Toddy. I’ll also combine that trio in a trifecta box along with a win wager on Dunph. The Springboard follows three stakes races, providing an excellet sequence for the multi-race exotics.
