2018 MLB Opening Day Betting Lines Picks

2018 MLB Opening Day Betting Lines Picks

Finding Opening Day Angles

As always when betting my hard-earned money, I have to find angles I believe in coupled with value that makes sense. That's exactly what I'll try to do with my opening day plays. At its core, baseball is a simple game. Good pitching beats good hitting, and early in the season pitchers are ahead of hitters. With these simple reminders in play, here are a couple games I love today.

St. Louis Cardinals (+113) @ New York Mets (-133) O/U: 6.5 @ 1:10 PM ET

Noah Syndergaard takes the ball for the home team and this guy looks ready to dominate after a spring which saw him light up the radar guns. Injured last season after a fast start, Syndergaard looks very live in this spot and should give the Cardinals lineup plenty of problems. I see value in taking the Mets on the moneyline, but I especially like them on the runline as I think they scratch out enough runs against Cardinals starter Carlos Martinez to win comfortably. For the newbies unaccustomed to betting bases, the runline means the Mets must win by at least 2 runs here and we will make $1.60 for every $1.00 invested at these odds.

TAKE New York -1.5 @ +160 Runline

Houston Astros (-174) @ Texas Rangers (+149) O/U: 9.5 @ 3:35 ET

I hate to sound this confident, this early in the season, but this game seems like one of the true mismatches of opening day. I love the value and the angle here. The World Series Champion Astros will roll out righty ace Justin Verlander who they acquired in a late-season move last year. Verlander was nothing short of dominant in the 2017 postseason, providing every bit of the push the Astros needed to win the title. I think Verlander mows down the Rangers lineup all afternoon while the Astros hitters should have little trouble scoring runs against Rangers starter Cole Hamels. This is another situation where I like the moneyline, but I'm going to be greedy and play the runline for added value.

TAKE Houston -1.5 @-120 Runline

Prop bet bonus

Normally, I'm not a huge fan of season props as I prefer more immediate returns on investment, but here's one that looks too good to pass up. Bovada offers action on Cubs slugger Anthony Rizzo's seasonal RBI total. The over/under is listed at 95.5 with -115 odds on either side of the action. Rizzo has driven in at least 100 in each of his last three seasons, but keep in mind that he's been a model of health while doing so. In each of those seasons, Rizzo played at least 155 games with at least 572 at-bats. I wish no ill-will towards the sweet-swinging Rizzo, but as a betting man, there are too many things that can go wrong to predict Rizzo will continue at this clip. Minor injuries, slumps, and general bad baseball luck has me leaning towards the under here.

TAKE Anthony Rizzo UNDER 95.5 RBI for the 2018 season
