National Championship 2020: Will LSU Get The Job Done?

Updated February 9, 2023By Chris Boline

The Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana will be packed to the rafters on January 13th when LSU and Clemson go head-to-head in the 2020 National Championship.

Our friends at Bovada, where you can claim a $250 welcome bonus, have LSU at -225 odds to win the national championship, with Clemson coming in at +185. Who will win? These are our thoughts.

LSU Look Unstoppable

LSU are looking for their first CFP title in the CFP era and their first national title since the 2007 season and everything points towards them achieving their goal. Quite simply, they look unstoppable. Amazingly, LSU were only +250 to win the title before the playoffs began!

Eleven of LSUs impressive 14 victories have been by more than one touchdown and that is mostly down to their amazing quarterback Joe Burrow. Burrow won the Heisman trophy and is likely the number one pick in the upcoming NFL draft. Hes thrown 55 touchdowns and only six interceptions this season, passing for 5,208 yards.

LSU demolished Oklahoma 63-28 in their semifinals clash with Burrow throwing seven touchdown passes to tie the FBS record for touchdown passes in a bowl game. Burrow is helped by wide receivers JaMarr Chase and Justin Jefferson who both have 18 receiving touchdowns this season.

If Anyone Can Stop LSU It Is Clemson

Clemson is looking for its third title in four years although theyll have their work cut out for them. The team showed great character to come back from a 16-point deficit to win their semifinals battle with much-fancied Ohio State and theyll need every ounce of that spirit to get the job done in New Orleans. We actually thought Ohio State would make it through, as depicted in this article, and they almost did.

Clemsons defence is stronger than LUSs, allowing almost half the points of their final opponents. Their offensive line has the players to trouble LSU with Trevor Lawrence enjoying 259 passing yards and 107 rushing yards against Ohio State, including a 67-yard touchdown.

Much hope is pinned on running back Travis Etienne who has more than 1,500 rushing yards this season and 18 touchdowns.

Best Bets To Make In The Final

According to the 2020 national championship odds, the smart money is going on LSU to win the final. They are the best football team this season and will be worthy champions. The National Championship odds of -225 seem fair, but better value can be had, perhaps taking LSU with a -4.0 spread at -140 instead?

Bovada has priced the over/under at 70 points, which seems quite high. Only one of the past five finals has hit this target and that was the freakish 45-40 victory by Alabama against, ironically, Clemson in 2016. The average over those five years has been 64.4 points, making taking the under at -110 a decent bet. As is the +120 offered on their being under 66.5 points, tieing in with our prediction of a 35-31 victory for LSU.
