Real Salt Lake won the MLS Cup in 2009 but have since failed to reach those epic heights. In 2015, for the first time in seven seasons, Real Salt Lake failed to qualify for the playoffs. They rebounded in 2016 and qualified for the postseason with the sixth and final playoff spot. They finished two points above Portland Timbers for the final playoff spot but crashed out of the first round, losing on the road to Galaxy. So, are this Jekyll and Hyde team destined for glory in coming seasons? [+]

Real Salt Lake's brief history is fascinating. 'The Royals', as they are known (Real means Royal in Spanish), would like to emulate Real Madrid, and joined the MLS in 2004 as the 12th franchise. Real Salt Lake started playing in 2005.

Real Salt Lake won the MLS Cup in 2009 in the most improbable fashion.

RSL entered the playoffs and with some serious momentum. They were up against LA, the overwhelming favorites. Not overawed by the occasion, RSL won the final 5-4 on penalties, with goalkeeper Nick Rimando putting in a Man of the Match performance.

How To Make Money on Real Salt Lake Betting

Real Salt Lake snuck into the 2016 playoffs by the skin of their teeth but couldn't upset LA in the first round. Their road record was bad, but not as bad as a lot of other Western Conference teams. They won four games on their travels, tied for the second most in the conference. It shows just how poorly Western Conference teams perform away from home.

Real Salt Lake only lost one game at home but tied too many matches to qualify as the all-important third or fouth seed. Drawing eight home matches, Real Salt Lake matched Galaxy for the most home draws in the Western Conference.

If they can turn a few of those draws into wins, Real Salt Lake will be in good standing entering the playoffs. They aren't particularly potent going forward, nor do they concede bundles of goals so you'll have to dig deeper into the analytics to gain a more holistic impression of whether to back the over or under.

Jordan Allen is a star for RSL these days, and his goals and assists can fire them to the playoffs.

An outright MLS Cup win is not beyond them and their odds in comparison to other teams with the equal threat looks good value.
