The Pittsburgh Pirates joined the National League in its eighth season in 1887 and found instant success. The club won three straight NL Pennants from 1901 to 1903, and just six years later captured their first of five World Series titles. The Pirates competed in the NL East up until the 1994 season when the club was moved to the Central Division. The franchise’s last World Series crown came in 1979 when the Pirates took down the mighty Baltimore Orioles in seven games. [+]

Willie Stargell, who at 39 became the oldest player to take playoff MVP honors, was spectacular throughout the series, had a .400 average with a record seven extra-base hits against the O’s. Stargell also crushed three home runs in the World Series.

The Pirates have won nine NL Pennants and nine division crowns. The club has also earned wildcard playoff berths three straight years from 2013 to 2015.

Stargell still holds the franchise record for most home runs with 475. Robert Clemente — the Pirates’ former all-star outfielder — spent his entire 18-year career in Pittsburgh and is the franchise leader with 3,000 hits. Wilbur Cooper’s 202 pitching wins in a Pirates uniform also stand as a franchise best.

How To Win At Pittsburgh Pirates Betting

Teams in the NL Central are known for producing high-scoring contests. That also includes the Pittsburgh Pirates, who in 2016 finished sixth in the National League with 729 total runs.

The Pirates won’t woo anybody with their power as the club finished 12h in the NL in home runs during the 2016 campaign. However, that same season Pittsburgh accumulated 1,426 total hits — ranking fifth in the National League.

All-star outfielder Andrew McCutchen has been the Pirates’ most productive hitter over the last few seasons. McCutchen has averaged 20 or more home runs since 2011 while also carrying a batting average that has topped .300 in the past.

Gregory Polanco may be the face of the franchise for many years to come. The outfielder had a brilliant 2016 campaign, hitting 22 home runs and adding 86 RBIs.

Pitching will be an area of concern the Pirates need to address. Gerrit Cole has been the club’s ace, but the rest of the rotation has drawn criticism. In fact, the Pirates finished 9th out of the 15 NL teams in quality starts with 68, meaning not many starting pitchers in the rotation can get past the fifth inning.
