The history behind the Oakland Athletics franchise dates back to 1901, when the organization made its debut as the Philadelphia A’s. After spending 53 years there, the team relocated to Kansas City in 1955. The franchise played 12 more seasons in KC before relocating to Oakland in 1968 where the team has played ever since. Combined between the three cities, the franchise has won nine World Series championships — its last coming during the 1989 season. That year, the Athletics finished the season with a 99-63 record before sweeping the San Francisco Giants in the Battle of the Bay series. [+]

Pitcher Dave Stewart went on to capture playoff MVP honours after earning two of the four victories on the mound.

The A’s have won 15 American League Pennants and 16 West Division titles.

Mark McGuire was the face of the franchise for many seasons and for good reason. Along with Jose Canseco, the duo was known as the Bash Brothers as hitting home runs were what the sluggers did best.

McGwire hit 363 homers during his time with the Athletics — a mark that still stands as a franchise best. Former shortstop, who split his time with the Athletics in Kansas City and Oakland, recorded a franchise-leading 1,882 hits with the club.

How to Make Money on the Oakland Athletics

The Oakland Athletics have used a unique strategy that has set them apart from the rest of MLB teams over the years. Using analytics to gain the upper hand on their competition, the A’s have found a few diamond-in-the-rough players throughout the course of the last five seasons.

A perfect example of that is slugger Khris Davis, who went from 27 home runs and 66 RBIs in Milwaukee to 42 homers and 102 RBIs in his first full season in Oakland. The left-fielder has been the Athletics’ most productive player offensively. However, Davis will need to improve on his batting average, which has been in the .247 range the last two seasons.

Pitching has also been a growing concern for the Athletics, who in 2016 finished third last in American League ERA at 4.40. Kendall Graveman was the only pitcher to hit double digits in wins with 10.

The Athletics, who had the fourth-lowest payroll in Major League Baseball in 2017, will have to keep being creative in order to keep up with the powerhouse clubs like the Boston Red Sox, Texas Rangers and New York Yankees in the AL.

When betting on the Athletics, put your wagers down with caution. The club had losing records at home and on the road in 2016, making the A’s a tough team to back moving forward.
