There’s a rich history that runs through the Detroit Tigers franchise. Established in 1901 as one of the American League’s eight charter teams, the Tigers have captured four World Series championships — its last coming in 1984. That year, manager Sparky Anderson led the Tigers to an incredible 104-58 record before defeating the San Diego Padres in the World Series final. Third baseman Alan Trammell won MVP honors after drilling a pair of home runs in Game 4 of that crucial series against the Padres. [+]

After several seasons of disappointment, the Tigers built a championship-calibre lineup that featured current first baseman Miguel Cabrera. The all-star slugger was acquired in a blockbuster trade with the Florida Marlins in 2007 — a year after the Tigers lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series. Cabrera made an instant impact and helped carry the Tigers back to the World Series in 2012, when the 11-time all-star won the Triple Crown with a 3.30 batting average, 44 home runs and 139 runs batted in. However, the Tigers suffered the same result as six years prior, this time being swept by the San Francisco Giants in the final.

Al Kaline holds the club record for most home runs with 399, however Cabrera is closing in on that mark and should become the franchise leader in the future.

How To Win At Detroit Tigers Betting

Pitching has been an issue with the Tigers. Not so much with its starting rotation, but the bullpen, which has been notorious over the last few seasons for coughing up late leads in key situations.

The club has been through a carousel of closers and have yet to find one that can shut down a game in the ninth inning.

The Tigers finished 11th overall in the American League with a 4.24 ERA — a statistic that club will need to improve if it wants to compete with AL giants such as the Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians.

Detroit’s starting rotation continues to flourish, with veteran right-hander Justin Verlander leading the way. However, a pitcher to keep an eye on will be Michael Fulmer, who won 11 games in his rookie campaign in 2016 and is capable of putting up 15-18 victories for the Tigers on a yearly basis.

Time is running out for the ageing Tigers to finally win that coveted World Series crown that has eluded the franchise since that 1984 glory season. If the bullpen can repair itself, watch for the Tigers to contend for a world championship in the next few seasons as Cabrera winds down his Hall of Fame career.
