Wales vs Portugal Euro 2016 Betting Tips
Euro 2016 Semi Final Prediction
By Angelo Montilla
Portugal (+121) Vs Wales (+300)
It will be much more than just Portugal versus Wales when the two countries clash in what is sure to be a heated Euro 2016 semifinal on Wednesday.
It will also be Cristiano Ronaldo versus Gareth Bale — the two Real Madrid teammates who will do battle on the pitch with a spot in the European Championship final on the line.
“Of course we get on very well at Madrid, we enjoy playing with each other,” Bale told BBC.com. “He’s a fantastic player, everybody knows what he can do. But we have always spoken about what we do, what we do ourselves as a team. We don’t worry about the opposition.”
Portugal has yet to win a game in regulation and has squeaked through to the semifinals by the skin of their teeth. Their latest victory came in penalty kicks — a 5-3 quarterfinal win over Poland. Wales stunned the soccer world by defeating No. 2 ranked Belgium 3-1 in their quarterfinal clash.
These two sides have only met three previous times, with Portugal holding an edge with two victories to Wales’ one. Portugal has also outscored their opponents 7-4 in those three matches.
In the Euro 2016 tournament, Wales has netted 10 goals with 59 overall attempts — 29 of which were on target. Portugal fired 95 shots toward the goal, with 30 actually hitting the target and six finding the back of the net.
It’s likely this match may go the distance, beyond 90 minutes and into extra-time territory and yes, maybe even penalty kicks. Portugal’s last two victories have gone beyond regulation. Bovada has a +600 line they’ll win in extra time and +850 that they’ll advance to the championship via penalty kicks.
Portugal is also a +195 favorite to record a shutout victory — a bet worth considering as Rui Patricio has posted two clean sheets in the tournament so far.
Breaking down the Ronaldo-Bale matchup, the numbers have been quite similar during Euro 2016. Bale has played 443 minutes with three goals and 14 shots on target. Ronaldo has been on the pitch 51 minutes, scoring twice and taking nine shots on goal.
As expected, both stars are favorites to score for their respective countries on Wednesday. Bovada has Ronaldo as a +120 favorite to score at any point of the match and +300 to net the game’s opening goal. Will this be Ronaldo’s day to dominate? A bet worth looking at is Bovada’s line of +500 that Ronaldo will score two or more goals.
Bale is pegged at +175 to score in the match and +450 to net the opening marker.
While Portugal may boast a deeper offensive unit, Wales is not a one-trick pony either. After Bale, Wales will rely on Southampton striker Sam Vokes, who Bovada has at +400 to score his team’s opening goal.
Wales’ magical run should not be overlooked, but it won’t be enough to get past a determined Ronaldo, who at 31, is still looking for his first major international competition victory.
Pick: Portugal (+121)
