Anaheim Ducks (-130) vs. Edmonton Oilers (+110)
The well-rested Anaheim Ducks — coming off a sweep in the opening round of the NHL playoffs — will continue their quest for the Cup when the Pacific Division champions take on the Edmonton Oilers in the Western Conference semifinal.
The best-of-seven series kicks off on Wednesday with the Ducks hosting Game 1 at the Honda Center. Anaheim enter the matchup as -130 favorites to finish off the young Oilers and return to the conference final for the second time in three years.
The mission will be a little tougher for the young Oilers, who head into the contest as +110 underdogs after knocking out the San Jose Sharks in the opening round.
After an early playoff exit a year ago, the Ducks are determined to get back to the final. The club is on the right path having knocked out the Calgary Flames in the first round.
At times, the Ducks made it look much to easy as the team averaged 3.50 goals per game, which ranks second only to the defending Cup champion Penguins.
If you’re craving game props, look no further than Bovada’s margin of victory lines, which is offering +525 odds the Ducks will in fact take the opener by a one-goal margin. If you want to take the same bet on the Oilers, Bovada has set a line of +575 Edmonton will steal Game 1 by a single marker.
Overtime has been a growing trend in the playoffs, so betting that the first game of the Western Conference semifinal will need extra periods to settle a winner isn’t farfetched. A $100 wager on the first match reaching overtime will payout $245 — a strong possibility especially considering three of the last four meetings have been decided by one goal.
If you’re basing your decision solely on previous matchups over the last 10 meetings, the clear-cut pick would be the Ducks, who have won six times during that stretch.
Faceoffs are such an integral part of the post-season and there aren’t many teams better than the Ducks, whose 53.4 percent rating ranks at the top among teams remaining in the playoffs. In comparison, the Oilers are winning just over 47 percent of faceoffs — a number they’ll need to improve on against top centers such as Ryan Getzlaf and Ryan Kesler.
Betting on total goals in this series will be somewhat tricky as just three of the last 10 meetings between the Ducks and Oilers have resulted in over outcomes. Let the first couple games play out before placing an over/under wager.
The series will go the distance, but in the end, it’ll be the Ducks’ experience that will prevail. Take Anaheim in seven games.
Pick: Anaheim Ducks (-130)
