Success has followed the Pittsburgh Penguins since the early 1990s when — led by Hockey Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux — the team captured back-to-back Stanley Cup championships. The team recently won its fourth Stanley Cup crown and second in the last 10 years after defeating the San Jose Sharks in the final. The Pens have won a five conference championships and eight division crowns. The Penguins entered the National Hockey League as one of the first expansion teams in 1967.
After several tough seasons of missing the playoffs, the Pens were awarded the No. 1 pick in the 2005 NHL Draft where they selected current captain Sidney Crosby. The Penguins, who remain one of the powerhouse teams in the Eastern Conference, have had their fair share of multiple Art Ross Trophy winners along the way. Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr, Crosby and Evgeni Malkin have all won the league scoring title at least twice in their career.
The Penguins enjoyed their best season during the 1992-93 campaign, when Lemieux and Jagr led the team to a 56-21-7 record. Former head coach Dan Bylsma is the all-time leader in wins behind the Penguins bench with an overall record of 252-117-32 from 2009 to 2014.

Always among the leaders in goals for, the Penguins boast one of the strongest offensive units in the NHL. In four of the last five regular seasons, Pittsburgh has finished among the top 10 teams in the league in goals for. They topped the NHL in that department in 2011-2012 and 2012-13.
What else do you expect from a team that boasts offensive weapons like Malkin, Crosby and now Phil Kessel? When betting on total goals in a game that involves the Pens, it’s safe to take the over in many instances.
The Penguins are also a strong team at home after posting an impressive 26-11-4 on Concol Energy Center soil this season.
While one of the better teams at finding the back of the net, the Pens also boast a strong defensive unit and were among the league leaders in penalty kill percentage.
Led by Kris Letang, the Pens allowed just 199 goals all season long — the sixth fewest in the National Hockey League. Only Anaheim, Washington, Los Angeles, St. Louis and Tampa Bay allowed fewer goals.
One of the best moves the Penguins made was hiring general manager Jim Rutherford back in 2014. Rutherford brought with him a winning pedigree after building a championship team with Carolina in 2006.
It didn’t take long for Rutherford to piece together what turned into a championship team in Pittsburgh — adding key pieces like Phil Kessel from Toronto in a blockbuster deal and forward Carl Hagelin from the Anaheim Ducks.
