With some of the splashiest moves during the 2015 offseason, the Detroit Tigers have made themselves one of the dark horse picks to not only win the AL Central, but also have a surprise World Series run in 2016. Detroit picked up a couple of nine-figure contracts in pitcher Jordan Zimmerman and outfielder Justin Upton to help bolster the All-Star, albeit aging, core of pitcher Justin Verlander, and batting standouts Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez. This was all in an effort to erase the memory of the 2015 season.

How To Win At Detroit Tigers Betting
Detroit finished last year with a disappointing losing record (74-87) which was the first time they had done so since 2008, also missing their first postseason in five years. What kept the Tigers from contending last year was a rash of injuries to their top talent including Verlander, Cabrera, Martinez, shortstop Jose Iglesias and pitcher Anibal Sanchez. To make up for these shortcomings and to narrow the gap in the AL Central, the Tigers ownership opened up their checkbook and made sure that Detroit would have enough staying power in 2016.
With some new faces and some old guns to mesh with this year, it’s no doubt that the Tigers have star power, but the jury is still very out on whether or not that can translate to on-field success in 2016.
While the old saying goes, “money can’t buy you happiness”, it certainly seems that the Tigers are set on making that the case for winning baseball games. There are in fact cases of these spending sprees working (see Yankees, New York), but there are more examples of it blowing up in the team’s face. Just ask the 2015 San Diego Padres who had a frenzied buying spree in the 2014 offseason (that also included the acquisition of Upton), only to finish under .500 and also to be saddled with a hefty amount of new contract debt. It still remains to be seen how Detroit’s investments will pan out in the long run.
The positives for Detroit are obvious in their stout pitching staff. Verlander is still a knockout pitcher and while the former MVP is entering his mid-30’s he still is a deadly ace if he can stay healthy. Zimmermann and Sanchez are both solid in the order and adding Francisco Rodriguez (nearly 400 career saves) as the team’s closer was a tremendous move.
On the flip side is the variable of whether or not the aging Tigers players can stay healthy or not. The star power is no doubt there, but the formula for the last couple of World Series champions hasn’t been to spend large in free agency, but rather to develop their players — the San Francisco Giants of the last couple of years come to mind. Detroit has the firepower but they need to improve their win totals against the Royals (9-10) and also against weaker teams (the Tigers went 1-6 against the lowly Angels in 2015) to improve on last year. It should be noted that the Tigers did have winning records against their other AL Central rivals.
There are definitely a lot of things to like about Detroit, but the window for contention is closing in the Motor City.
Finally, some basic tips and tricks you should know for each wager is to know who is starting that day for the Tigers and also who is on the inactive list for each team.
