Belmont Park is the home of the Belmont Stakes, the third and final leg of the thoroughbred Triple Crown racing series. It is known as “The Test Of The Champion” as it’s the longest of the three jewels. The race is held annually in June and has been running since 1867. There was no race held in 1911 or 1912 because of new legislation that made gambling in New York State illegal. Ruthless was the first winner of the race.

2017 Belmont Stakes
The field has been set for the 2017 edition of the Belmont Stakes and the third jewel of horse racing’s Triple Crown will be run on Saturday, June 10. Though there is no Triple Crown on the line and the race will not feature the Kentucky Derby winner, Always Dreaming, or the Preakness winner, Cloud Computing. The race has drawn a competitive field of twelve colts and geldings.
Irish War Cry has been installed as the lukewarm favorite at odds of 7-2 and his chances improved exponentially when juvenile champion Classic Empire withdrew from the race with a minor hoof injury. Trained by Graham Motion, the chestnut colt is a son of Curlin who was second in the Belmont Stakes in 2007 behind the filly Rags to Riches.
Irish War Cry turned in a disappointing effort in the Kentucky Derby but enjoyed a sharp win in the Wood Memorial two starts back over Cloud Computing who then came back to win the second leg of the Triple Crown.
For the second year, the Belmont Stakes will feature an international flair with a colt from Japan. Last year, Lani treated fans to his wild antics throughout the Triple Crown.
Epicharis, by all accounts, has not been nearly as quirky as his predecessor and is coming in very fresh having last raced in the UAE Derby in March. His pedigree is infused with stamina and while he is a relative unknown, he should have no problem with the grueling distance of a mile and a half. With the three-year-old crop being so uninspiring at this point, why not go with an unknown commodity?
Patch is likely to be overbet because he is a sentimental favorite among the fans. The colt only has one eye and despite that, has overcome adversity and become a solid stakes competitor. He does need to make a step forward but comes out for connections that are always dangerous on a big day. Todd Pletcher and jockey John Velazquez teamed up to win the Kentucky Derby with Always Dreaming and also won the Belmont Stakes in 2007 with Rags to Riches.
